Shaping the stool legs

Printer-friendly version
  1. Cut three or four boards for the legs. Typical dimensions are about 2 inches square and 18 to 22 inches in length.
  2. Carve the overall shape. Typical stool legs should be thicker on top than on the bottom.
  3. Carve the tennon to match the mortises drilled into the seat top.
  4. Cut a wedge slot in each tennon. For maximum strength ensure that the wedge slot runs with the grain.
  5. Carve a wedge for each leg.
