Tuning a guitar

  1. Tune the high E string to the fifth fret harmonic of the low E string.
         ~5 x x x x 0
     
  2. Tune the G string second fret (E) to the 12th fret harmonic of the low E string.
         ~12 x x 2 x x
     
  3. Tune B string third fret (G) to the G string 12th fret harmonic.
          x x x ~12 3  x
     
  4. Tune the G string seventh fret (D) to the the D string 12th fret harmonic.
          x x ~12 7 x x
     
  5. Double Check: Compare the 12th fret harmonic of the G string to the third fret (G note) of the high E string. If they are not in tune, adjust the G string.
          x x x ~12 x 3

  6. Tune the A string 12th fret harminic to the G string second fret (A).
          x ~12 x 2 x x
