Explorer Tournament Boat Project Meeting Notes
Tentative agreements
- All three schools are interested. We will explore approval and funding at each school.
- All teachers seemed to think it would be best as a weekend project to avoid impacting current classes. This also allows students in other groups to join in.
- This project requires steady parent participation as students can not build these boats by themselves.
- It might be helpful to start the projects together on a weekend. Michael agreed to attend this session to help us get us off to a strong start. Considering Napa as the location, but other locations are possible. Each school will continue construction at their own location and on their own schedule.
5. Planning to use the boats with students on April 15. Location to be determined, but tentatively set for Spring Lake.
Boat design
- We choose the El Toro design because it is easy to build, light weight, can be used for rowing or sailing, and has an interesting, local history.
- Each school will try to build two El Toros. Based on Michael's information, they can be built in 2 – 4 full days at a cost of about $150 (more if we add sails, which we probably should). Working with the students, we plan to spend several months working on the boats. This will also leave time to build in a richer curriculum (budgeting, drafting, safety, navigation, weather, etc.)
Possible schedule
- Oct 10, 2010: Initial Meeting:
- Oct, 2010: Presentations to faculty, charter councils for approval
- Nov, 2010: Project approved, materials gathered
- Nov. 2010: Initial construction begins (with Michael's help)
- March 15, 2011: Complete wet test of all equipment before student use.
- April 15, 2011: Regatta

Construction Notes
Construction Notes from El Toro Meeting on December 5, 2010
Break down process: skill level, function, student teams, adult teams
Steps: JIG, outer section, inner section, sanding, prime and paint
JIG is the skeleton of boat
Can use scrap plywood for JIG
Ron says we get free plywood from local source
Build in Harmony Hall and woodworking room
Assign 1 lead carpenter
Ron hopes to hang one on ceiling rafters
Use house based enamel, not latex or marine quality
With construction materials from a local hardware store, and keeping the boat indoors, boat will last years. Left outside, boat will last 5 years
Use liquid nails, outdoor deck grade. Deck screws should be brass or steel
1-2 sheets of plywood per boat
Carl Welding, form Napa Sea Scouts, is a good local contact
Document this project, possibly videotape
Wil has life preserves
El Toro Meeting Minutes Sunday, December 5, 2010
In addition to SBS parents, the following were in attendance: Wil Anderson, Michele Conyers, Ron Liskey, Michael Richeson (local nautical businessman), James Yeager from Woodland Star and Megan McCabe from River Oak School in Ukiah
Each boat takes 10 hours to build. We need 8 Sunday’s from early January until early April to complete project
Harmony Hall will become El Toro building site every Sunday
For the Explorer Games in April, we need 6 boats for the 3 schools
River Oak can build 1
Woodland Star offered financial support and possibly build all the oars
Michael Richeson donated his El Toro to SBS. We can use this finished boat as a template
Parents interested in construction committee: Brent, Chuck, Lowell, robby’s dad. Ron and Wil interested as faculty members. Determine 1 lead carpenter to streamline project
After much discussion, it was recommended that the construction committee of adult’s make 1 El Toro completely then involve students in boats 2 and 3
We can probably get 1 boat on loan from one of the sailing clubs in the bay area
Ron Liskey plans to hang 1 boat from ceiling rafters
Discussed documenting construction, possibly videotaping
Wil suggests we auction off 1 boat at Extravaganza
Michele suggests we auction off the boat as a fundraiser for the 8th grade class trip
Susan Branum offered to contact local sailing companies to donate materials
Budget: each boat costs $200 max. We can use scrap lumber. Confident we can obtain most materials as a donation and then raise money from Woodland Star and SBS 7th grade parents, if necessary
All the minutes pertaining to the construction of the boats will be given to lead carpenter
