Bookbinding
Introduction
This document describes a bookbinding program for Wadorf-inspired classes in grades four through eight. It links main lesson blocks with related specialty subjects across grades and curriculum.
Linking blocks across grades increases student interest as they can more easily see the purpose and ultimate result of what they are learning. Students learn age-appropriate bookbinding skills in each grade. Such skills include paper making, glue making, ink making, ribbon making, block printing, printing presses, caligraphy, type design, origami, inlay and embossing, etc.
The program concludes in eighth grade with each student creating a high-quality, case-bound book using a combination of homemade materials and professional archival materials. These books contain examples of the students best work throughout the grades and may become a family treasure.
