What I think I've learned
Now that I'm on the downhill run, it seems appropriate to sort out what I think I've learned along the way. It's not much so far, but here it is in no particular order:
- Spend time in the wilds (or what's left of them).
- Remember names.
- Don't assume bad intentions when perfectly normal incompetence is a reasonable explanation.
- Clean up.
- Enjoy the moment. (It's all moments.)
- Garden.
- First things first.
- Read books.
- Don't confuse novelty for change.
- Eat good food, mostly plants.
- Keep moving.
- Go to bed early; get up early.
- Work with the flow.
- Don't gossip.
- Resist comforting illusions.
- Be kind.
- Speak the truth or be silent.
- Share credit; accept mistakes.
- Avoid extremes.
- Honor the past; remember the future.
- Plant trees.
- Finish what you start.
- Live in another country long enough to become a foreigner in your own.
- It's better to do what you think is right and be wrong than to do what you think is wrong and be right.
- Relax, enjoy, good bye...
